Muesli Bar

system guided assembly through an
Assemble-by-Light application

In the course of the project seminar, a group of international students from the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt developed an Assemble-by-Light process. Here, assembly in the manufacturing process is simplified for the production worker by means of light elements.

Components for muesli assemble process:
bowl, yogurt, oatmeal, cranberries

End product: Muesli

To generate the end product, several ingredients must be mixed during the manufacturing process. To ensure the correct sequence in the assemble process, the ingredients that are currently required are illuminated with a light element. After the production employee has successfully added the illuminated ingredient, he must confirm it by pressing a button. The next ingredient will then be illuminated.

  • Less error-prone. During the assemble process less mistakes can occur due to a guided process.
  • Less teach-in phases. Employees do not need long teach-in phases and can be deployed more easily.
  • Real time information. The assemble process is documented in near real time and displayed in the ERP-System.

How does this work?

Microsoft Azure or Node-Red

ERP-System

Microsoft Dynamics NAV is an ERP-System which supports the process and resource management of a company. To use Dynamics NAV in certain IoT-Use Cases it offers the possibility to create web services.

In the described muesli bar use case the business process is managed and displayed via Dynamics NAV.

Therefore the production order has to be created to get the Assembly-by-Light application running.

Workflow - Possibility One

As the first possibility for the data extraction & data processing Microsoft Azure can be used. It is a cloud computing platform with several services.

In the specific use case the workflow for the extraction & processing is realized by the Logic App. The workflow starts with trigger, which is triggered as soon as a production order is created in Dynamics NAV. By then the needed data is extracted and leaded through the workflow.
For the material confirmation the required information is forwarded back to Dynamics NAV. This happens via a SOAP web service connection.

Workflow - Possibility Two

As the second possibility for the data extraction & data processing Node-Red can be used. It is a development tool for connecting several devices without coding experience.

Also in Node-Red a workflow for the data extraction and processing has to be built.
The information of the Assemble-by-Light process is forwarded via a HTTP-Request to Node-Red. The information is then forwarded back to Dynamics NAV again. Therefore a SOAP-Request is used.
